“Repent, and believe the Gospel”

13 Feb 2013, KL -St. Anthony’s Church, Kuala Lumpur was full by  7pm Wednesday mass which was a trilingual mass (English, Tamil and Bahasa Malaysia) as the parishioners came to begin the season of Lent.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40 days of Lent Season.  It is the season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption.  During these 40 days, the Lord Jesus Christ invites us to walk with Him to Calvary repenting from our sins.

“Remember that thou art dust, and to dust thou shall return” or “Repent, and believe the Gospel” was the phrase uttered by the priest and the minister when imposing the ashes. The ashes signify for Christians that life on Earth is temporary and is a symbol of mourning and repentance in preparation of Easter. The blessing and imposition of the ashes replaces the Penitential Act in Ash Wednesday liturgy.  Palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebration are burned to make these ashes.

After the imposition of ashes, the priest proceeds to the Universal Prayer which was said in Tamil, English and Bahasa and the Liturgy of Eucharist was performed as usual.  Refreshments were provided after the mass.

May this season of Lent  be not just another chapter in our Christian life; but let us challenge ourselves in renewing our faith in the Year of Faith through steadfast prayer, standing up for social justice in the midst of changes in Malaysia as well as abstain ourselves from all the unwanted habits and mindset. Let us be the agent of change and agent of faith this Lent!
